| SERVICE | DESCRIPTION |
| Writing | We write your document, manuscript, or promotional material to your specifications based on your notes, drafts, or resource materials. We then perform all of the proofreading, copyediting, and substantive editing corrections listed under Substantive Editing, Copyediting, and Proofreading in order to ensure that the text incorporates the principles of good writing style. |
| Rewriting | We perform all of the proofreading, copyediting, and substantive editing corrections listed under Substantive Editing, Copyediting, and Proofreading. In addition, we work with you, using your outline, notes, or drafts to produce a complete, clean manuscript. This service frequently requires serious changes in substance and organization as well as style and is likely to require additional research. |
| Substantive Editing |
We perform all of the basic
copyediting and
proofreading corrections listed
under Copyediting and Proofreading. In addition, we
make the substantive changes necessary to improve your work. We concern
ourselves with your work's clarity, style, structure, development,
organization, and overall presentation. We also eliminate wordiness and
inappropriate jargon; smooth transitions and move sentences to improve
readability; address matters such as suspect use of sources or
quotations, faulty reasoning, and unsupported conclusions;
enforce a uniform tone and focus; and suggest and sometimes implement
additions and deletions, noting them at the sentence and paragraph
level. For fiction, we also address issues of plot, plausibility,
character development, dialogue, and narrative flow. |
| Copyediting | We perform all of the proofreading corrections listed under Proofreading. In addition, we examine your work with an eye for typographical miscues, stylistic inconsistencies, and formatting and keyboarding mistakes; change text and headings to achieve parallel structure; flag inappropriate figures of speech; ensure that key terms are handled consistently and that vocabulary lists and indices contain all the terms that meet specified criteria; ensure that previews, summaries, and end-of-chapter questions reflect content; change passive voice to active voice, if appropriate; flag ambiguous or incorrect statements; enforce consistent style and tone in multi-author documents; and track the continuity of plot, setting, and character traits in fiction manuscripts. |
| Proofreading | We concern ourselves with all matters of style and consistency, including spelling, punctuation, grammar, word choice, cross referencing, sequencing (such as alphabetical and numerical order in lists), sentence structure, verb tense, and clarity. We also flag and query issues of tone, development, and overall presentation of the material and, where appropriate, offer suggestions for revision. Proofreading does not involve interventions such as smoothing transitions or changing heads or text to ensure parallel structure. The proofreader checks content only to detect areas where copy is missing. |
| Quality Assurance | We read a manuscript to correct indisputable errors, such as misspellings, typographical errors, misnumbering or mislabeling, subject-verb disagreement, errors in word usage, and incorrect or outdated cross-references. We mark typeset copy word for word against a manuscript, identify deviations for correction, and query editorial errors. We also may check copy for conformity to type specifications, create a style sheet, and ensure attractive typography by checking margins, word spacing, repetitive word breaks, and so forth. |
| Formatting and Layout in MS Word | We format your document in accordance with your existing style guidelines. Alternatively, we can create style guidelines for you and then apply those guidelines to your document. We can apply or adjust font styles, margins, basic style sheet properties, headers and footers, page numbering, columns, and bulleted/numbered lists. In addition, we can rearrange tables and graphics, add tables of contents and indices, and perform other formatting services, as desired. |
| Manuscript Evaluation | We review your work and produce a detailed written assessment of its strengths and weaknesses -- a guide to improving the manuscript that covers such matters as content, clarity, style, tone, structure, development, organization, and overall presentation, as well as issues of tense, grammar, syntax, word choice, and punctuation. For fiction, we also address issues of plot, plausibility, character development, dialogue, and narrative flow. We do not make all corrections; instead, we tell you the specific ways in which your work needs improvement. The result is a section-by-section analysis of your work. We choose examples of recurring problems and correct them within the body of the manuscript. We suggest strategies for revision, and we make ourselves available for follow-up questions as you review the results of our work upon its completion. |
| Writing Instruction | We provide onsite and/or online writing instruction to individuals and businesses. We can demonstrate how to develop documents in a work environment, ask the planning questions that will determine a project's success, brainstorm for ideas, organize information, understand the principles of good writing style, focus on a set of readers, control the first draft and revisions, evaluate documents according to initial project requirements, and provide quality control checks throughout the process. We have extensive experience in designing and teaching courses that help people in business, technical, and academic settings to write clear and persuasive prose. |
| Editorial Management | We perform any or all of the following tasks, as desired: manage an entire editorial project or series of projects; hire editorial staff; schedule deadlines and track project milestones; develop detailed training plans and institute all staff training; establish formal document review procedures; develop editorial or editorial department processes (e.g., writing, editing, configuration management, and quality assurance); review all aspects of the editorial and production process and enforce consistent standards throughout; and ensure communication among all members of the editorial team, including writers, editors, graphics designers, and subject matter experts. |
